凡歌诗，须要整容定气，清朗其声音，均审其节调，毋躁而急，毋荡而嚣，毋馁而慑，久则精神宣畅，心气和平矣。每学量童生多寡，分为四班。每日轮一班歌诗，其余皆就席敛容肃听，每五日，则总四班递歌于本学。每朔望，集各学会歌于书院。

In singing the poems, one must compose the person and steady the breath, voice clear and bright, measure and tune even and exact — neither rash nor hurried, neither wild nor clamorous, neither faint nor cowed; in time the spirit flows free and the heart's breath is at peace. Let each school divide the children by number into four sections: daily one section sings while the rest sit composed and listen; every fifth day the four sections sing in turn at the school; on the first and fifteenth, all schools gather to sing at the academy.
