先生语陆元静曰：「元静少年亦要解《五经》，志亦好博。但圣人教人，只怕人不简易，他说的皆是简易之规。以今人好博之心观之，却似圣人教人差了。」
先生对陆元静说：「元静年少时也要注解《五经》，志向也在求博。但圣人教人，只怕人不简易，他讲的都是简易的规矩。用今人好博的心来看，倒好像圣人教人教差了。」
The Master said to Lu Yuanjing: 'In youth you too would gloss the Five Classics, your will set on breadth. But the sage in teaching feared only that men be not simple and direct: all his rules were simple and direct. Seen by today's hunger for breadth, the sage's teaching might look mistaken.'
