朋友观书,多有摘议晦庵者。

先生曰:「是有心求异,即不是。吾说与晦庵时有不同者,为入门下手处有毫厘千里之分,不得不辩。然吾之心与晦庵之心,未尝异也。若其余文义解得明当处,如何动得一字?」

朋友们看书,多有指摘朱熹的。

先生说:「这是有心求异,就不对了。我的说法与晦庵时有不同,是因为入门下手处有毫厘千里之差,不得不辨。但我的心与晦庵的心未曾有异。至于其余文义解得明白妥当的地方,怎么能改动一个字?」

The friends, reading, often carped at Zhu Xi.

The Master said: 'To seek difference on purpose is wrong. Where my words sometimes differ from Hui'an, it is that the point of entry differs by a hair that becomes a thousand miles, and I cannot but discriminate. Yet my mind and Hui'an's mind were never at odds. Where his explanations of the text are clear and apt, how could one alter a single word?'
