先生曰：「诸公近见时，少疑问，何也？人不用功，莫不自以为已知为学，只循而行之是矣[1]。殊不知私欲日生，如地上尘，一日不扫便又有一层。著实用功，便见道无终穷；愈探愈深，必使精白、无一毫不彻方可。」
先生说：「诸位近来见面时，疑问少了，为什么？人不用功，无不自以为已经懂得为学，照着做就行了。殊不知私欲天天滋生，如同地上的尘土，一天不扫便又积一层。切实用功，便见道没有穷尽，越探越深，必须使它精纯洁白、没有一毫不透彻才好。」
The Master said: 'Gentlemen, of late when we meet your questions are few — why? Not working, everyone fancies he already understands learning and needs only walk it out. Little do they know selfish desire rises daily, like dust on the floor: sweep one day, a new layer the next. Work in earnest and you will see the Way has no end — the deeper the probe, the deeper it goes — until it is pure white, not a hair unpenetrated.'
