The Master said: 'Life's great disease is one word — pride. A son proud will be unfilial; a minister proud, disloyal; a father proud, unloving; a friend proud, untrue. Xiang and Danzhu came to nothing for that one word — a lifetime closed by it. Bear this ever in mind. The human heart is heaven's own principle, bright and bright, no thread of stain — nothing but selflessness; the breast must hold nothing of the sort: to hold it is pride. The many goods of the ancient sages were nothing but selflessness; selfless, one is humble of oneself. Humility is the base of all good; pride, the chief of all evil.'
