乡人有父子讼狱，请诉于先生，侍者欲阻之，先生听之。言不终辞，其父子相抱恸哭而去。
柴鸣治[1]人问曰：「先生何言，致伊感悔之速？」
先生曰：「我言舜是世间大不孝的子，瞽瞍是世间大慈的父。」
鸣冶愕然。请问。
先生曰：「舜常自以为大不孝，所以能孝；瞽瞍常自以为大慈，所以不能慈。瞽瞍只记得舜是我提孩长的，今何不曾豫悦我？不知自心已为后妻所移了，尚谓自家能慈，所以愈不能慈。舜只思父提孩我时如何爱我，今日不爱，只是我不能尽孝。日思所以不能尽孝处，所以愈能孝。及至瞽瞍底豫时，又不过复得此心原慈的本体，所以后世称舜是个古今大孝的子，瞽瞍亦做成个慈父。」
乡里有父子俩打官司，来向先生申诉，侍者想拦住，先生听他们讲。话没说完，父子俩相抱痛哭而去。
柴鸣治后来问：「先生说了什么，让他们感悔得这样快？」
先生说：「我说舜是世间大不孝的儿子，瞽瞍是世间大慈的父亲。」
鸣治愕然，请教。
先生说：「舜常自以为大不孝，所以能孝；瞽瞍常自以为大慈，所以不能慈。瞽瞍只记得舜是我一把屎一把尿养大的，如今何曾让我快活？不知自己的心已被后妻移了，还说自己能慈，所以越发不能慈。舜只想着父亲把我养大时怎样爱我，今日不爱我，只是我不能尽孝。天天想自己不能尽孝之处，所以越能孝。到瞽瞍被感动顺服时，也不过恢复了他此心原本慈爱的本体。所以后世称舜是古今大孝的儿子，瞽瞍也做成了个慈父。」
A father and son of the district, at law with each other, came pleading to the Master; the attendants would have barred them, but he heard them out. Before the tale was done, father and son fell on each other's necks weeping and went their way.
Chai Mingzhi later asked: 'What did you say, that they repented so fast?'
The Master said: 'I said Shun was the world's most unfilial son, and Gusou the world's most loving father.'
Mingzhi was startled and asked for the sense.
'Shun ever deemed himself most unfilial — hence he could be filial; Gusou ever deemed himself most loving — hence he could not love. Gusou kept only in mind that he had raised Shun from infancy: why does he not delight me now? — not knowing his heart had been turned by the second wife, still calling himself loving, and so daily less able. Shun thought only how his father loved him in raising him: loved no more today, it must be that I have not fulfilled filialness. Dwelling daily on where filialness fell short, he grew daily more filial. When Gusou was at last moved and yielded, it was only the recovery of the heart's originally loving substance. Hence after ages call Shun the great filial son of all time — and Gusou was made a loving father.'
