「先生尝言：『佛氏不著相，其实著了相；吾儒著相，其实不著相。』请问。」
曰：「佛怕父子累，却逃了父子；怕君臣累，却逃了君臣；怕夫妇累，却逃了夫妇，都是为个君臣、父子、夫妇著了相，便须逃避。如吾儒有个父子，还他以仁；有个君臣，还他以义；有个夫妇，还他以别，何曾著父子、君臣、夫妇的相？」
「先生曾说：『佛家不执着相，其实着了相；我们儒家执着相，其实不着相。』请问。」
答：「佛家怕父子牵累，便逃离了父子；怕君臣牵累，便逃离了君臣；怕夫妇牵累，便逃离了夫妇：都是为君臣、父子、夫妇着了相，才须逃避。我们儒家有父子，还他以仁；有君臣，还他以义；有夫妇，还他以别：何曾着了父子、君臣、夫妇的相？」
'You once said: the Buddhists, clinging to no forms, in truth cling to forms; we Confucians, clinging to forms, in truth cling to none. Pray explain.'
He said: 'Fearing the entanglement of father and son, the Buddhist flees father and son; fearing ruler and minister, flees ruler and minister; fearing husband and wife, flees husband and wife: all from having fixed on the forms of ruler-minister, father-son, husband-wife — hence the flight. We Confucians, having father and son, render them humaneness; ruler and minister, rightness; husband and wife, due distinction: when did we ever fix upon their forms?'
