先生谓学者曰：「为学须得个头脑[1]，工夫方有著落；纵未能无间，如舟之有舵，一提便醒。不然，虽从事于学，只做个『义袭而取』，只是行不著、习不察，非大本、达道也。」
又曰：「见得时，横说竖说皆是。若于此处通，彼处不通，只是未见得。」
先生对学者说：「为学必须有个头脑，功夫才有落点；纵然还不能不间断，也像船有了舵，一提便醒。不然，虽然从事于学，只做得个『义袭而取』，只是行而不明、习而不察，不是大本达道。」
又说：「真见到了，横说竖说都对。若此处通、彼处不通，只是还没见到。」
The Master told the learners: 'Learning must have a guiding head for the work to land anywhere; even if not yet unbroken, it is like a boat's rudder — one touch and you wake. Otherwise, though you study, you achieve only a righteousness snatched by surprise — acting without understanding, practicing without awareness — not the great root and reached Way.'
He added: 'Once truly seen, it is so said across or said lengthwise. If it opens here yet not there, it simply has not been seen.'
